but I cannot say definitely how much, because my attention was taken up by the activities of the crews of the motor boats. The other motor boat remained tied up to the cruiser until the first motor boat returned, When it arrived back the 2 anchors of the cruiser were pulled up, a bule was blown, the cruiser was put astern, and she got off under her own power. One motor boat preceded her as she steamed off back to the Japanese Destroyers The other ran up on to the beach on the South side of the pier, in front of the Wing Yeung Company. Two men dressed in khaki came ashore and entered the Wing Yeung compound on the South side. These 2 men went to the door of the Ming Yeung shop and knocked on it with what appeared to me to be either rifles or long batons. Just shortly after they knocked I saw a foki run out of the back of the store across the paddy fields into the bushes at the foot of the hill. The 2 men in khaki walked after him a few yards beyond the hack of the store and then returned to the beach. They went round the north side of the Wing Yeung Company, where I lost sight of them. They returned just shortly after and one of them

was carrying a basketful of chickens. They went to the motor

bost, boarded it, and it set off back to the Japanese Destroyer.

It was then about 17.00 hours to 17.15 hours. At about 17.30 hours after the last motor boat had left I came down from my hiding place, and went to see if I could see anyone hiding in the bushes at the back of the matsheds to tell them that it was safe to come

out, and to see if anyone had been injured. I did not see

anyone, but whilst doing this I found shell No.1 (afterwards photographed outside the Wing Yeung Company), and about 7 yards away found shell No.2 (photographed out s ide Chan Sing's matshed) I took them back one at a time and placed them outside my

matshed.

From dusk until a Police Launch came, people came out in ones and twos from their hiding places, and we sat around and

discussed this matter.

Later I took one of the shells (marked with a character
